Synchronicity with Neutral Observation: Fostering Acceptance and Empathy in a Diverse World

We are in a fast growing world, where dismissive labels like "dumb, stupid, good for nothing, or useless" are often thrown around carelessly for small errors. I keep hearing these words in schools, amongst peers in public places.

It's easy to resort to dismissive labels like these, when someone makes a mistake. But these labels can have a surprisingly long-lasting negative impact and can play havoc in someone’s self-esteem, honor and confidence .

However, ditching the labels and fostering a more understanding environment benefits everyone and spreads the knowledge that each one of us is Unique and has a Unique set of privileges & experiences.

The Diversity & Difference that we have is what makes life interesting.

Here are a few Dos & Don’ts to change the way we think about others and open the doors of love & acceptance:

  • Do focus on specific behaviors. Instead of a blanket statement of "dumb/useless" for a mistake, address the action and offer constructive feedback like "Hey, there seems to be a miscalculation here. Let's double-check together." Don't rely on negative labels. They chip away at confidence and hinder the willingness to accept their mistakes & learn.

  • Do emphasize effort and progress. Acknowledge the hard work someone puts in and celebrate their improvements, no matter how small. A simple "Great job catching up on that!" can go a long way. Don't dismiss someone's efforts because they haven't grasped a concept immediately. Keep in mind that no child has ever learnt to walk without once falling.

  • Do embrace differences. People learn and comprehend at their own pace. A supportive environment celebrates these variations and finds ways for everyone to shine. Don't make someone feel inferior because they learn differently.

Incorporate these dos and don'ts to move away from judgmental labels and the resultant guilt/regrets. Cultivate a space where everyone feels empowered to learn and succeed.
